Product Description

LOCTITE EA 9309.3NA AERO is a toughened two-part epoxy paste adhesive for bonding metal skins and honeycomb core. The formulation contains 0.13 mm glass beads that help establish a controlled bondline during assembly. It produces flexible bonded joints and provides high shear and peel strength on prepared aluminum under the documented test configurations. The adhesive can cure at room temperature or with an elevated-temperature cycle, with a 35-minute pot life for a 450 g mixed mass at 25°C. Performance data include lap shear across -55°C to 82°C, peel testing, hot/wet exposure, water, hydraulic oil, fuel, anti-icing fluid, and salt spray.

Preparation and cure

Processing guidance

Prepare clean, dry bonding surfaces, mix the two components completely at the specified weight ratio, apply the adhesive, and maintain contact or pressure until the joint develops handling strength. Processing times and performance depend on mixed mass, temperature, surface preparation, bondline, and cure conditions.

Component conditioning: Bring the separate components close to room temperature, approximately 25°C, before mixing.
Mix ratio: Combine 100 parts Part A with 22 parts Part B by weight and mix thoroughly. Volume measurement is not recommended for structural applications unless special ratio-control precautions are used.
Pot life: 35 minutes for a 450 g mixed mass at 25°C, tested by ASTM D2471 in a water bath.
Batch-size limit: Do not mix quantities greater than 450 g. The reaction can generate excessive heat, uncontrolled decomposition, and toxic fumes.
Assembly: Apply to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces and hold the parts in contact until the adhesive is set.
Handling strength: 12 hours at 25°C. Support tooling or cure pressure may then be removed, but full bond strength has not yet developed.
Cure: 3-5 days at 25°C or 1 hour at 82°C to achieve normal performance.
Storage and handling

Warranty life is 1 year for both components when stored below 25°C. Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated area away from incompatible materials. Part B has a safe storage range of 0-25°C and must not be heated above 100°C. This material is for industrial use only.

Performance evidence

The following typical results are configuration-specific. Aluminum alloy, surface preparation, adherend thickness, cure, pressure or vacuum, conditioning, and test temperature materially affect the values.

Aluminum lap shear across test temperatures
  • 2024-T3 clad aluminum with FPL preparation, cured 72 hours at 25°C under 0.7 bar pressure: 37.7 MPa at -55°C, 32.8 MPa at 25°C, and 6.4 MPa at 82°C.
  • 2024-T3 bare aluminum with PAA preparation, cured 2 hours at 66°C under 0.7 bar pressure: 34.5 MPa at 25°C and 6.9 MPa at 82°C.
ASTM D1002; 1.6 mm aluminum adherends. The sub-ambient specimens were soaked for 30 minutes before testing.
Environmental exposure performance
After a 5-day cure at 25°C, PAA-treated 2024-T3 Alclad specimens produced typical lap shear values of 29.6-35.2 MPa when tested at 25°C after the specified hydraulic-oil, fuel, anti-icing-fluid, hydrocarbon, water, hot/wet, and salt-spray exposures. The unconditioned control measured 33.1 MPa.
ASTM D1002; 1.6 mm aluminum adherends with PAA preparation. Exposure duration and temperature varied by medium, from 7 days at 25°C to 30 days under water, hot/wet, or salt-spray conditions.
T-peel and floating roller peel
  • Typical T-peel at 25°C: 214 N/25 mm for 2024-T3 clad aluminum after a 72-hour cure at 25°C, and 142 N/25 mm for 2024-T3 bare aluminum after a 2-hour cure at 82°C.
  • Typical T-peel at -55°C: 138 N/25 mm and 93 N/25 mm for the same respective configurations.
  • Typical floating roller peel at 25°C: 418 N/25 mm on PAA-treated 2024-T3 bare aluminum after a 72-hour cure at 25°C.
T-peel per ASTM D1876 and floating roller peel per ASTM D3167. Specimen thickness, aluminum condition, PAA preparation, cure, and vacuum are configuration-specific.
Service-temperature definition and creep result
Approximate service temperature is 82°C, defined as the temperature at which the adhesive retains 6.9 MPa lap shear by ASTM D1002. Creep deflection was 0.0142 mm after 192 hours under an 11.0 MPa load at 25°C.
The service-temperature value is a test-defined threshold, not a statement that every bonded assembly retains unchanged properties to 82°C.
